The City of Camanche, population 4, 215, is a charter Iowa city and was the first county seat of Clinton County. Camanche was a thriving and
prosperous community, but in 1860 it was devastated by a monstrous tornado. The deadly storm claimed 28 lives and destroyed 228 buildings.
Survivors pulled together and rebuilt the community, demonstrating extraordinary community spirit, a spirit which remains a strength of the
Camanche community today.
Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, Camanche offers many recreational opportunities,
including boating, fishing, camping, and hunting. Residents and visitors to Camanche enjoy
the comforts afforded by a smaller community, including a strong local school system and the
satisfaction that accompanies knowing your neighbors. At the same time, Camanche’s proximity
to Clinton allows the residents to participate in the activities and events of a larger community.
In many ways, it’s the best of both worlds.
Camanche is a proud community. We are proud of our heritage, we are proud of our strong
sense of community, and we are proud of the tremendous quality of life that we treasure and
value. We invite you to take a look at Camanche. We think you’ll like what you see!
